Residential and supported living services

Our skilled teams understand complex communication and sensory needs. We create environments that promote Total Communication, using a range of approaches so you can express yourself, understand others and be truly heard. Support is shaped around you, not the other way around.

We provide a wide programme of meaningful activities, from sports and arts to wellbeing experiences, both in your home and the local community, with further educational opportunities available if you want them. Whether you want to be creative, get active, learn or make friends – the choice is always yours.

By focusing on what you can do, and not what you can’t, we will work together to remove barriers and build a life that feels safe, supported and full of possibility.

Who we can support in Sense services

We support disabled people with complex needs, and our services will provide you with specialist, person-centred support tailored to your individual needs. We support people with a variety of complex needs, such as:

Two men are sitting next to each other laughing to each other. They're both holding cups of tea in their hands.
  • Sensory impairment
  • Learning disability
  • Physical disability
  • Autism

If you are still unsure about whether our services are right for you or your loved one, we are here to help you talk it through.

Our approach

For over 70 years, we’ve understood that every person is unique and the right support looks different for everyone.

When you first stay with us, we will work alongside you to create an individualised support plan that’s shaped around what matters most to you. This includes:

  • Building a routine around your likes, dislikes, goals and dreams.
  • Adapting your space to suit you, including colour contrasts and lighting.
  • Helping you access the support you need to communicate.
  • Discovering new hobbies through our arts, sports and wellbeing activities.
  • Meeting like-minded people and making friends.

We know that moving into a new home is a big step. That’s why we will be there for you every hour of every day, so you’ll never have to face it alone.

What to expect

Our services can be found all over the country – we’re by the coast, in the countryside and in the heart of cities.

Joe is stood in his kitchen, holding a kettle over a sink which he is about to fill up. he is wearing a grey sweater and smiling widely.

But every service is different and shaped by the people who live there.

We will support you to live with privacy, independence, choice and inclusion.

You’ll live in a shared home with 24-hour support from a team who will get to know you well.

You’ll have your own bedroom or annexe, with access to shared spaces like kitchens, lounges, dining rooms and gardens.

Why you should trust us

Over 70 years ago, our founders, Peggy and Margaret, refused to accept that their deafblind children would be left without connection or support. They created a community where disabled people could learn, communicate and belong. That same spirit continues to shape all of our services today.

Over the decades, we have seen how our services  can provide the right support for disabled people, helping them feel safe, connected and more in control of their everyday life.

This consistent, high-quality and personal support means that you will never be left on the sidelines.

Our promise to you

All of Sense’s residential support homes for disabled adults are registered and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). You can see our CQC ratings here.

We also have our own set of standards – the Sense Quality Framework and the Sense Outcomes Framework – to measure how well we’re supporting you.

Often all you need is the right support around you

Franklyn has lived at a specialist residential care home run by Sense for over ten years now. He’s deafblind, with limited vision in his left eye and very limited hearing.

During these years together, Franklyn has given us a really strong impression of who he is and what he enjoys in life. His support worker, Elliott, describes how Franklyn has defied expectations and broken down barrier after barrier.
