What you’ll learn at Sense College

The Sense College curriculum balances wellbeing with essential life skills and qualifications.

At Sense College East, we offer three learning pathways: Learning for Life, Foundation Learning and Employability. All three pathways will help you build life skills and become more independent.

 Learning for Life

This pathway is for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).

It’s all about building confidence, strengthening your communication skills and preparing for life as an adult.

You’ll be supported by staff who are qualified in multi-sensory impairment (MSI) and complex communication.

You’ll take part in sessions designed to help you with:

  • Sensory development
  • Physical wellbeing
  • Independence
  • Technology
  • Social enterprise and work skills
  • And more!

Foundation Learning

A young man sits in front of a whiteboard, while his support worker gives him a thumbs-up.

Students on the Foundation Learning pathway work towards accredited qualifications.

We’ll help you hit the targets set out in your Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Along the way, you’ll also build life skills, make friends and take part in sports and leisure activities.

All Sense College learners can also get career advice. The Foundation Learning pathway includes opportunities to volunteer and gain work experience.

Key learning areas include:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Independent living skills
  • Technology
  • Careers and employability
  • Arts and crafts

Employability

Get ready for the world of work with our Employability pathway. This is the right choice for people who already know their career goals.

On this pathway, you’ll spend lots of time on a supported internship. You’ll learn all about what it’s like to be in the workplace, and show your skills. At the end of your internship, you could be offered paid employment.

You’ll get your own job coach, who can support you with things like travel arrangements and applying for the Access to Work scheme.
