Make art with nature paintbrushes

This colourful activity combines fresh air and nature with getting creative, by making art using twigs and leaves.

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either in your own space or in an educational setting.

This is a crafting activity for people who are deafblind or have complex disabilities and can be enjoyed by anyone.

How to do this activity

What you’ll need

  • Elastic bands or tape
  • Paper
  • Paints
  • A selection of twigs, leaves, grasses and flowers.

Step 1

Gather your materials by going for a walk or going to the garden, then collect leaves, twigs, flowers and grasses. Stronger twigs are better!

Step 2

Make your paintbrushes by attaching the grasses, flowers or leaves to the twigs using either the elastic bands or tape.

Step 3

Use your brushes to explore patterns and shapes with the paint. Try painting with different plants, or ways of brushing on the paper. Have fun and experiment!
