Will you support a child like Elliot to express himself and make sense of the world around him?
When we first met Elliot, who has severe hearing loss and little sight, he had no means of communicating with his mum and dad.
At Sense, our job is to find the right ways to empower children like Elliot to express themselves, communicate and connect with their family – be it through speech or sign, touch or movement, gesture or sound, art or dance.
One of the ways we do this is through a specialist assessment.
This assessment is a crucial first step in understanding what a child can do. It also helps parents to learn the best ways to communicate and connect with their children.
"Thank you so much for supporting Sense. For my son Elliot, and our family, Sense has truly been a lifeline.
"Before we contacted Sense, we felt like we had no one to turn to. We were expecting a healthy baby, so when we learned that Elliot couldn’t hear my voice, couldn’t see my smile – it was devastating.
"And then I just thought – what next? How do I even begin to communicate with him? How do I teach him anything? I couldn’t even tell him that I loved him, because I knew he wouldn’t be able to hear me. It was absolutely heart breaking.
"I can’t tell you how grateful I am that Sense was there for us – and I’m so grateful to you for helping to make that possible. Contacting Sense was the best decision I’ve ever made on behalf of Elliot. They were the only people who understood Elliot, and how to help us communicate with each other."
