A donation, no matter how large or small, can make a real difference to the lives of people who are deafblind or who have complex disabilities. Thank you!
Sense Children and Family Support Worker Nicky, first met Mia when she was four years old. Mia has a rare condition, which causes epilepsy, affects her motor skills and causes severe developmental delay. Mia also has a visual processing condition that means although her eyes can see, her brain is unable to process the information. She can distinguish between light and dark, but she can’t see detail, so going into darkness can be distressing for her as she struggles to understand what’s happening. Thankfully, with support from Sense – Mia has been receiving the specialist help she needs to progress.
Mia loves the sensory room at the Sense Family Centre. It’s where we discovered how well she responds to lights as it’s filled with twinkly lights, stimulating UV lighting, fibre optic strands and sensory toys. We’ll always remember when Mia reached out for a sensory toy that makes noises and vibrates, smiling each time she touched it. This was the first time we had seen Mia demonstrating her ability to make her own choices.
This Christmas, we are asking you to help another child who is deafblind – a child who, without our support, may not be able to interact with the world around them.
"I find it very difficult to think about where we would be as a family if it weren’t for Sense and your support. Sense – and Nicky in particular – have played a huge part in helping us move out of the darkness and enjoy Mia for who she is now, while also providing advice and support moving forward.
As someone who supports Sense, you are not only giving children with complex disabilities a chance to develop and grow, but you’re also helping parents like us find a place to belong. Having a disabled child can be a very lonely experience, but you help bring families together and allow them to support each other with shared experiences and understanding.
Thank you so much, and I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas!"
- Andrew, Mia’s dad
