Tailoring play to include the way each child communicates is important. Learning to communicate as a family or group is a great bonding experience – and play activities can include both informal and formal communication methods.
Signing songs are a great way of bringing children together to sit and interact. The songs include basic vocabulary from British Sign Language or signing systems, such as Makaton, and can easily be adapted to include other forms of communication, such as on-body signing or deafblind manual.
Try to consider the pace and wording of the song – and that you may only want to teach key signs.
