New starters

When you start with us, you'll receive a tailored induction.

Your induction will include a range of online and face-to-face training modules, which include learning about Sense, health and safety, safeguarding, and equality and diversity.

After you've completed your e-induction you'll have the opportunity to take an online introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) course.

If you have a role directly supporting people with complex disabilities, you'll complete further training as part of your induction. This includes:

  • Emergency first aid
  • Dysphagia awareness
  • Positive behaviour support
  • Medication awareness
  • Infection prevention and control
  • The Care Certificate (England) and Induction Standards (Wales and Northern Ireland)

If you're appointed to a management role, you'll have the opportunity to take part in our 'Sense Growing Stronger Leaders Together' leadership development programme. This was awarded a Skills for Care Accolade and was a finalist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Awards 2017.

Ongoing development

Following on from your induction, you'll have plenty of opportunities to learn within your job.

Every day you'll learn from the interactions with your colleagues, opportunities to work with and support other parts of the organisation, mentoring and coaching from a brilliant team around you. Supported in your role by your manager, your development will be thoughtfully planned.

Learning opportunities

We also offer a programme of over 100 online and face-to-face learning opportunities, including:

  • Wellbeing courses (such as anxiety awareness, stress management, mindfulness and keeping active)
  • Personal development courses (such as time management, mentoring, unconscious bias and assertiveness skills)
  • Practice development for frontline Support Workers (such as communication methods, guiding, identity, sexuality and personal relationships, personalisation and active support and healthcare training)
  • Leadership and management development (such as our award winning Growing Stronger Leaders Together programme)

External development programmes

Also, Sense participates in two external development programmes, open to applications from all staff:

  • A cross-organisational mentoring programme which matches any member of staff that would like to receive mentoring with an experienced mentor from another charity. Anyone who works at Sense also has the opportunity to act as a mentor themselves through this programme if they would like to.
  • Moving Up – a programme that aims to develop the leadership potential of people who identify as from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic community and provides Sense with the opportunity to develop talented, future senior leaders. Participants take part in an innovative learning approach based on a series of learning networks, one-to-one coaching and mentoring. This programme is run by Skills for Care.
