Put on a pantomime in your PJs

Pantomimes aren’t just for Christmas! Learn how to put on your very own home performance – all you need is a couple of props, your imagination and an audience. You can even do it in your pyjamas! If you’ve got extra help, you can get someone else to join the cast too.

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either in your own space or in an educational setting.

Who is this for?

This is a workshop for people who are deafblind or have complex disabilities and can be enjoyed by anyone.

Why does this make a difference?

This is a sensory arts activity that supports creativity and learning, helping people use their senses to connect with their surroundings, build confidence and learn new skills.

What happens in the video?

Step 1

Pick a hero that you could model your pantomime’s main character after, or come up with a brand new one. Think about how they’ll stand – where do they put their hands, what do they wear, what do they hold? Find a prop or costume you could wear as the hero.

Step 2

Now come up with a villain – think of a movement that someone evil and powerful might do, how they would stand, speak, or laugh, like a witches’ cackle. Find a prop or costume to dress yourself as a villain. (Remember when you’re in the audience, if you see or hear the villain, remember to boo and hiss!)

Step 3

Think about how your characters could interact to come up with your pantomime – watch the video for more tips.
