Learn to write poetry

Everyone can be a poet! Learn how to create a poem in this 15-minute inclusive poetry workshop inspired by the colour blue

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either at home or in an educational setting.

Who is this for?

This is an arts activity for people who are deafblind or have complex disabilities.

Why does this make a difference?

This activity provides inclusive opportunities that give people the chance to learn new skills, supporting expression, individuality, connection and understanding.

How to take part

Watch the video below.

What happens in the video?

Step 1

Grab a pen and paper. Either write down everything blue that you can think of, or have fun collecting blue things around your home. Arrange or number the blue things in order of your favourite.

Step 2

How do the blue things make you feel? Write down as many sentences as you can think of. It might be about how it feels to hold – what sort of texture do the objects have?

Step 3

The second exercise is called the Poetry Hand, and you’ll need some felt-tip pens. Trace the outline of your hand, and write or sign a happy memory for your thumb. For your index finger, write down or sign a wish. For your middle finger, write something you want to change. For your ring finger, something you love, and for your little finger a promise to yourself.
