Homemade hand exfoliator

This homemade hand exfoliator is easy to make with household ingredients.

It has a pleasing, sensory texture and afterwards your hands should feel moisturised thanks to the oils and softer thanks to the rough material which helps remove dead skin.

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either in your own space or in an educational setting.

This is a wellbeing activity for people who are deafblind or have complex disabilities and can be enjoyed by anyone.

Why does this make a difference?

This is a sensory activity that promotes wellbeing and relaxation, and helps people learn by engaging with nature and using their senses to connect with their surroundings, exploring touch and different textures and supporting independent choice.

How to do this activity

What you’ll need

  • Small bowl
  • Spoon
  • Washcloth
  • 1 tbsp oil (like coconut, olive or jojoba)
  • 2 tsp of either sea salt, sugar, poppy seeds, or dried coffee grounds
  • Essential oils (optional)

Step 1

Set up a range of options of ingredients to smell, explore and choose from. You will need one oil and one coarse ingredient.

Step 2

Place your chosen coarse ingredient in a bowl, then add the oil and mix well. If you’re using essential oils, add a few drops now.

Step 3

Your hand exfoliator is ready! Gently rub it into your hands, taking time to enjoy the sensations and smells. Afterwards, wash off with warm water using the washcloth.

  • Please check allergies and do a patch test before use.
  • Homemade hand exfoliant doesn’t keep, so only make what you will use.
