Working in a Sense shop

Working in a charity shop is often more challenging than working within commercial retail. But being part of a hard-working team who are generating funds to help deafblind people, and making a real difference in your community, comes with its own rewards.

A group of Sense shop staffThere are a variety of employment opportunities within most Sense shops, the three most common are:

Shop manager

The role requires you to successfully motivate staff and volunteers, and manage all available resources to the maximum benefit of Sense, in terms of both income and public perception of Sense as a caring charity.

This is a hands-on role involving the selection, pricing, and presentation of donated stock and, of course, customer service. You will need to be self-motivated, creative, and positively committed to working in charity retail.

Although not essential, previous retail or charity retail experience is beneficial, as is a full clean driving licence and the use of a car.

During the shop manager's absence you will be required to assume full responsibility for the shop. Although not essential, previous retail or charity retail experience is beneficial, as is a full clean driving licence and the use of a car.

Shop assistant

Highly active, this role requires you to not only be the public face of Sense at the payment counter, but to keep the sales and display area to a high standard of presentation. You will ensure stock is correctly ticketed, priced and well displayed.

The ability to communicate with the public in a manner consistent with a retail environment is essential, as is the ability to cope with hard physical work at times.

You will also need to be numerate to a level that ensures correct cash register and banking procedures are carried out.
