Sense Centre Rawmarsh Road, Rotherham (Ashley Court Resource Centre)
Situated in Rotherham, Sense Centre, Rawmarsh Road (Ashley Court Resource Centre) provides services for people who are deafblind or have a sensory impairment with additional disabilities.
Potential service users are usually referred by Social Services or related agencies who arrange an initial assessment carried out by Sense staff.
At Sense Centre Rawmarsh Road, services are tailored to meet an individual’s needs, either within the centre or through our outreach or flexible intervenor teams.
Working with our specialist staff, all service users have a regularly reviewed person-centred plan - and with input from family, professionals and carers, the emphasis is on supporting a deafblind person in making choices about their life.
As individuals' communication methods vary, Ashley Court has a 'total communication' approach, adopting intensive interaction, objects of reference, British Sign Language, Sign-supported English, and Block methods along with other pre-language strategies for communication.
Our specialist approach
At Sense we recognise that deafblind people have different ways of accessing communication. Through trained and knowledgeable staff, Sense Centre, Rawmarsh Road provides tactile, visual and audible information, as well as assistive equipment so our service users can be as independent as possible in a specialist setting.
Aspirations and lifestyle
Our trained staff encourage service users to attain their aspirations by making full use of their communicative abilities. This often involved planned learning.
Depending on the needs and desires of the individual, activities such as voluntary work, swimming and gym use, shopping, eating out, and accessing the deaf club and places of interest take place in the community.
Other opportunities and facilities at the resource centre include daily living skills, arts, crafts and woodworking, rebound therapy, sensory room with vibro and heated water beds and ballpool, computers and sound beam.
Our staff are available to carry out Deafblind Guidance, functional vision and hearing, and communication assessments. We are able to offer training, support and advice for staff, and for families of individuals who have a sensory impairment with additional disabilities.
