Glenside Resource Centre
Glenside Resource Centre provides a service for people with sensory impairments and complex needs.
It is located in West Pinchbeck, near Spalding, Lincolnshire and opened in 2003.
The Centre delivers therapy and recreation-based programmes for people for whom an education programme is not appropriate.
Programmes are individual, with a person-centred and collaborative approach.
The Centre is situated in a quiet and semi-rural location, but maintains strong links with local communities and make use of a variety of local facilities.
Facilities and equipment
The Centre is housed in a large, purpose-designed building, with a recently refurbished sensory garden.
There are eight activity rooms including a large and well-equipped kitchen, a well-resourced sensory room, and rooms dedicated to information and communications technology (ICT), crafts, art, woodwork and music.
A smaller kitchen area is accessed by people wishing to make snacks and drinks, and a large and comfy communal lounge area is a great place to relax with friends.
We have many resources which support access to learning and enable information gathering, communication and mobility. These include: specialist ICT equipment such as a large interactive whiteboard and a mobile plasma screen loaded with specialist software, Braillers, Braille notetakers and embossers, touchscreen computers in all rooms, induction loops in several rooms and good signage around the site.
The sensory room provides an area which can be used by individuals or groups, and is equipped with audio and visual equipment which promotes interaction, choice-making and mobility. It also contains a massage and physiotherapy bed, large beanbags, a ball pool, resonance block and chair.
We have a highly motivated team of staff. More than half the team hold a Level One qualification in British Sign Language; three staff hold a Grade Two qualification in Braille; some staff are qualified teachers, and one holds a postgraduate qualification in multi-sensory education. We maintain a signing environment, and encourage students to learn a little basic sign where possible to aid communication between peers.
Art sessions are unique to individual students and incorporate colours, smells, textures and sounds. There are many pieces of artwork on display around the Centre.
Woodwork and sewing
There are always woodwork and sewing projects, with many examples of work produced for sale at Christmas, or just to take home. We have a small weaving loom and a spinning wheel so students can follow the complete production process.
Many people enjoy life skills and meal preparation sessions, often using produce from the Centre’s garden. These sessions are hugely enjoyable and provide opportunities for social interaction, choice-making, practical lifeskills, such as use of money, and exploration of tastes and textures.
All dietary needs are catered for, and menus are planned and prepared with full input from students. Sensory loss or difficulties with mobility are no barrier to creative cooking as there is a range of aids to support learners, from a talking microwave and weighing scales, to height adjustable sink and work surfaces.
Sense has it's own hydrotherapy pool situated at Market Deeping, which is shared between local resource centres and residential services. Hydrotherapy is a brilliant way to support mobility and develop use of the senses in a fun and motivating way.
Music and drama
A weekly visit from a local theatre company provides an opportunity for students to get together to develop performance skills using improvised drama and drumming and other percussion. This is a great way to build confidence, communication and to increase mobility.
Information and communications technology
Some of the most popular activities include emailing, the production of a Centre newsletter (which is distributed in paper, electronic and Braille formats), and the production of short films using stop motion animation.
Use is made of technology such as low vision readers, and students can also bring in their own communication aids to use.
Massage enables students to relax and feel comfortable and improves mobility. A qualified masseuse visits the Centre weekly, and delivers aromatherapy massage to individual students, and students also enjoy hand and foot massage at other times.
Some students need regular physiotherapy and we have access to a visiting physiotherapist.
We are very proud of our sensory garden, which is a lovely place to relax. Students are fully involved in maintaining it, and growing plants and produce, either for sale or for use in meal preparation. Horticulture sessions provide an opportunity to maximise the use of all senses.
There are very good links with the local community, and students access many facilites including bowling, swimming, rambling, shopping, trips to museums and other places of interest.
We use the facilities at a local gymnastics club as a base for rebound therapy sessions using a trampoline. Students from the Centre have taken part in community forums such as a disability access forum at a local hospital.
Communication, literacy and numeracy
We work hard to develop and support effective communication, and literacy and numeracy are embedded across all sessions in an education placement.
For students who access a therapy and recreation placement there is ongoing support to maintain skills and develop social interaction and friendships between peers.
