Learn how to make shadow puppets

Have fun making your own shadow puppets, and then put on a show by making your very own shadow puppet theatre out of a cardboard box. 

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either in your own space or in an educational setting.

Who is this for?

This is a workshop for people who are deafblind or have complex disabilities and can be enjoyed by anyone.

Why does this make a difference?

This is an arts workshop that helps people learn by using their senses to connect with their surroundings while building confidence, supporting self-expression, individuality, connection, creativity and understanding.

How to take part

What happens in the video?

Step 1

Grab some scissors, paper, some tape, a small pencil, a longer pencil to attach to your shadow puppet, and some card.

Step 2

Draw the shape you want your shadow puppet to be like, a butterfly.

Step 3

Cut out this shape using the scissors.

Step 4

Add any extra details and shapes to your shadow puppet, like a swirl, then carefully cut that out too.

Step 4

Use sellotape to attach the stick to your shadow puppet.

Step 5

To make your shadow puppet theatre, find a small cardboard box and cut a rectangle in it.

Step 6

Using the tape, attach the baking paper to the cut-out space you’ve just made.

Step 7

Finally, position the box in front of a light source and wave your puppet behind it to begin the show.
