Set up a sensory obstacle course

Dot your home obstacle course with sensory objects to make it a fun, enjoyable experience that explores all the senses.

You can set it up indoors, or if the weather’s nice, in an outdoor space.

This guide is part of our Sense Arts, Sport & Wellbeing programme. This activity can be done at a time that suits you, either in your own space or in an educational setting.

How to play

What you’ll need

  • A few soft objects to climb over, like a pile of blankets or cushions
  • Sensory objects which are colourful, noisy or have a nice texture, like a tub of rice or bells

How to set up

  • Arrange the soft objects on the floor to make an obstacle course
  • Place the sensory objects throughout the course

How to play

  • The aim is to go over, under and around the blanket and cushions ‘obstacles’ exploring the sensory objects as you go, ringing the bells, or running your hands through the rice

Other ways to play

  • Try laying down different textures on the floor, like bubble wrap, a rug or blanket, and explore them with bare feet
  • Experiment with building tunnels
  • You can also set up the obstacle course outdoors for a different sensory experience
