CHARGE syndrome

CHARGE is a very challenging condition that affects children, young people and adults. People who have CHARGE often have to cope with a wide range of physical difficulties, including sight and hearing problems.

CHARGE Syndrome was first identified in 1979 and is now recognised as a major cause of congenital deafblindness. The name CHARGE arose as an acronym for some of the features then thought to be most common in the condition. As more has become known about CHARGE the diagnostic criteria have been revised and changed, but the name of CHARGE has stayed.

Although it is thought that CHARGE is not a genetically inherited condition, recent research has identified a mutation of the CHD7 gene in a significant number of people with CHARGE; research is ongoing.

Despite the complexity of this condition, Sense knows many individuals with CHARGE who have been supported to rise above their medical and educational difficulties and achieve far more than was originally thought possible.

Sense encourages the earliest intervention possible and offers support right from the start. Our services include:

  • Practical advice and support for people with CHARGE and their families.
  • Specialist assessments that focus on the development, and educational needs of each individual.
  • Information about CHARGE, including ideas and news from our international contacts.
