Samantha

Sam is 21 and has Congenital Rubella Syndrome. She has been in contact with Sense for 19 years, who, along with her mum Edel, have helped her at the various stages of her life. She has been transformed from a child with limited communication options to a young woman who is increasingly able to communicate with those around her by using hand on hand signing.

How Sense supports Sam

With her ever-improving communication skills, Sam is able to work with her communicator guide Josie six days a week at Sense’s Garden Room. From art activities to massage sessions, Sam’s daily routine is aimed at not only providing fun and entertainment, but at developing her senses as well.

Both Edel and Josie wish for Sam to be able to live a fulfilled adult life; one in which, with the help of Sense, she will develop her own voice and increasingly be able to make her own decisions on issues as varied as her food and clothing choice, to where she lives in the future. Especially if Sam decides to live at a Sense residence, we can continue to give her all the care and support she needs.

Support the work Sense does

By donating to Sense, you can ensure that Sam and many like her are supported for as long as is needed. £2000 can help a group of deafblind people with a therapeutic course. This will pay for a course of weekly yoga or art therapy sessions at a specialist Sense day centre for a group of 5 people with their support workers.
