Kiera is 5 years old. Like all little girls, she loves to play. However, Kiera experiences the fun of games, like all things, through the sensation of touch. As a deafblind child, touch is both her eyes and her ears. The tickle of a feather, the warmth of her mother’s kiss; all are experienced through the magic of touch.

However, touch alone can be scary. For Kiera’s mother, Ashling, everyday can be a battle to communicate with her daughter. “I watch her sometimes and she gets so frustrated, and she is really just trying to tell me the simplest things, like I want that toy.” Such day-to-day challenges are frustrating for both Kiera and her family, experiencing difficulties and dangers in the most mundane tasks that we take for granted. “For Kiera, everything she does can be a challenge. She has to concentrate so hard on every little activity,” says Ashling.

Touch alone can’t break through Kiera’s world of silence, but you can.

Whether through vital first assessments, one-to-one teaching of the many forms of signing or fun activities that stimulate all the senses, Sense is able to help bridge the gap between a deafblind child and the wider world. You can help Sense transform a child’s life today.

When looking to the future, Ashling points out that, “I would hope dearly that Kiera would become a good communicator. More than anything, that she can communicate with us her wants, her needs, her desires in life.” Through working with Kiera, Sense is helping her achieve these wants, these needs, these desires that every child deserves.

Please help children like Kiera and donate now.
