Edith

Edith readily admits that she can “talk the hind leg off a donkey.” However, at 96, she doesn’t get much opportunity to do this. Living on her own, in recent years Edith has also had significant problems with both hearing and sight. It is a commonly overlooked form of deafblindness and one that affects many people as they become older, often heightening the sense of loneliness that pensioners can feel.

Giving Edith back her independence

Edith has lost some of her sense of isolation and regained much of her independence since she has been in touch with Sense. With the help of Alison, her Older Person's Outreach Worker, Edith was booked in for an ear wax check and provided with a hearing aid. Edith remarks of Alison, “She was determined that she was going to do something for me.”

At Sense, we aim to help people of all ages deal with deafblindness, and in the case of Edith find a solution to alleviate her hearing loss; allowing her to listen to the donkey, as well as talk off its hind leg.

Support the work Sense does

£75,000 allows Sense to provide two expert professionals working with older deafblind people. They carry out specialist assessments of an older person’s needs, as well as organising appropriate services and support for them. Help us reach more people like Edith. A donation can go a long way in supporting the work Sense does.
