Reaching Out Newsletter January 2012

A real Sense of achievement

It’s vital to a deafblind child that we discover the unique way to communicate with them.

Once the first breakthrough is made, our Sense support teams can start to transform a child’s life and that of their parents.

As Daniel’s mother Michelle discovered, working with Sense specialists opened a world of love, fun and learning for a deafblind child.

In our latest Reaching Out newsletter (pdf, 3.3Mb), Michelle describes ‘meeting’ Daniel and how together they are learning what he needs, wants and likes.

Daniel and his mother Michelle

Michelle, Daniel’s mother told us:

“You’ve helped us discover Daniel’s personality. I’m finally seeing his wicked sense of humour. It’s like you’ve helped me meet my son for the first time.”

Through your donation to Sense, deafblind children and their families can receive the gift of communication to last a lifetime.

Will you help more deafblind children in 2012?

We still desperately need your help. There are many new children to assess, and those we already support continually face new challenges.

Here are just a few ways you could help:

£20 could provide a special sensory toy like our interactive glowing balls which change colour when squeezed, or our brightly coloured textured building blocks.

£35 could help another mother like Michelle communicate with her child by giving a family their own specialist Sense worker to contact for advice or support.

£170 could allow a Sense Support Worker to visit a deafblind child at home and provide specialist advice on their development and learning.

£1,084 could cover the entire cost of a Sense assessment like the one Daniel was given. Two specialists from Sense visit a deafblind child and use sensory toys and equipment to find a way into their world, ensuring they have a chance to develop.

Let’s make 2012 a great year for more families like Daniel’s. Please send your gift today.
