Seven-year-old Megan’s parents are incredibly happy – their daughter has just learnt to hug.
Megan lives in North Wales with her mum and younger brother Joshua. She has had a visual impairment since birth, as well as physical and learning disabilities and as a result has struggled to learn how to communicate with her family.
Fortunately, Megan and her family are members of Sense. She attends a special education school, where a multi-sensory impairment specialist from Sense regularly visits and works to help Megan and the other pupils learn to communicate.
They also attend Sense groups and workshops where they are able to socialise with other deafblind people and their families. This summer Megan went on her third Sense holiday, where she got to spend time with other deafblind children her own age. The Sense holiday scheme also gives her family some respite from round-the-clock caring.
Megan is just one of the deafblind children Sense supports, read more in the Autumn issue of our newsletter.
