The third Sense Annual Lecture will take place on the evening of Wednesday 4 November at the Institute of Physics in Central London. The theme for the evening will be ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ and we are delighted to have secured another high-calibre pair of speakers for the occasion.
The first speaker, Professor Richard Schoch, is Professor of the History of Culture at Queen Mary, University of London. Richard’s lecture will derive from his critically acclaimed book, ‘The Secrets of Happiness: three thousand years of searching for the good life’. He will invite us to expand our conception of happiness by taking us on a historical journey - looking at different ways that happiness has been understood at different times and in different cultures.
Our second speaker is Paul Hart, Principal Officer (Special Projects) at Sense Scotland. Paul has established himself as one of the outstanding speakers on deafblind issues and will further explore the concept of happiness from a philosophical point of view. He will then highlight how a variety of activities including art, music, outdoor education and drama can allow real connections between people to develop and, in turn, allow people to develop strong identities. Paul will illustrate his lecture with stories from the lives of deafblind people but will draw parallels with the lives that we all lead.
The evening will conclude by 9.30pm
