Annual Lecture 2009: The Pursuit of Happiness

We all want to be happy - so the Institute of Physics in London was packed for the Sense Annual Lecture on the evening of 4 November 2009. Professor Richard Schoch and Paul Hart explored the pursuit of happiness, what happiness is, and how we can find it.

Can we all be happy? The good news is that happiness, as suspected, doesn’t come from material wealth, but from inside us. And we can all find it. We just have to know where to look, and be willing to struggle for it. According to the speakers, happiness lies, in fact, in that very struggle.

Drawing on thinkers both ancient and modern, Richard and Paul explored how we can each find happiness, through thought, spirituality and dedication – but above all, through our relationships.

For Sense, this puts the focus on the importance of enabling every deafblind person to have meaningful relationships, as without interaction with others, no life can be complete or fulfilling.
