Lombard and deafblind people's challenge

Two Lombard employees and a deafblind Garden centre workerEmployees from Lombard were challenged to raise money and awareness for Sense whilst testing their creative and entrepreneurial skills. They spent a day at Sense’s Garden Room project in Birmingham, working with deafblind people and Sense staff to build garden benches and then market them to raise funds.

Whilst the overall aim was to support Sense, the exercise was also structured to provide team building benefits - not least a fun ‘Apprentice’ style competition relating to the sale of the benches. Recently a Lombard sales team raised over £30,000 by running four Sense charity shops for a day. The production and sale of ten garden benches has raised a further £3,500 for the charity.

Teams of Lombard employees and deafblind Garden centre employeesRichard Hill, Chairman of the Lombard Corporate Social Responsibility Board, said, “The Sense Garden Room challenge is just one of the many opportunities that have been developed with Sense over the last two years. As with the other events, this was all about helping deafblind people, whilst providing knowledge for Lombard staff to take back to the work place. Charities such as Sense provide an excellent platform to test even the most senior and skilled business people by taking them out of their comfort zones and stretching commercial skills. The benefits to Sense are extensive and have a long lasting effect. We enjoy working with the Sense team and hope to develop our partnership throughout 2010”.
