Putting their best charitable feet forward

hikers on the Ridge Walk

Our first ever Ridge Walk Challenge event was a fantastic success. Thanks to all 350 participants who pushed themselves to the limit on the unseasonably hot April weekend. Many teams from all over the UK took part in this gruelling challenge in aid of Sense and the work we do with deafblind children and adults.

Nearly £100k has been raised so far and the total keeps rising!

Starting on Saturday 24 April in Watlington in Oxfordshire and ending on Sunday 25 April near Swindon in Wiltshire, the event was a first for Sense and the Community Fundraising Team.

The Mini Ridgewalk was 31 miles in 15 hours and a parallel event, the ‘Mega’ Ridgewalk was 52 miles in 24 hours. The first team to complete the ‘Mega’ walk were the ‘Sewer Rats’ who finished the event in a remarkable 13 hours. It was getting dark and only head torches could be seen in the distance but the team of three crossed the finish line just after 9pm on Saturday after starting at 8am that same day.

The majority of teams who took part, walked through the night and into Sunday morning before they reached the finish line. Many were bruised and tending to blisters but all were safe and glowing with pride from their achievements.

Our thanks also go to Global Adventure Challenges who did a fantastic job of tailoring the whole event.

We are already planning Ridgewalk 2011 and are planning to double the size of the event. If you would like to find out more or take part in the Ridgewalk 2011 please contact shad.everett@sense.org.uk or call 0121 415 2751.
