No more shared surfaces

On 19 February 2009 Sense Campaigns Assistant Jim Lewis joined approximately thirty other people outside Sloane Square Tube station in west London to protest against the conversion of the area in to a shared surface.

A shared surface is a space which motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can all use. Sense joined forces with the West London Residents' association and the Guide Dogs association to highlight the fact that shared surfaces make sections of cities dangerous for people with disabilities as well as older people to walk through. Shared surfaces increase the risk of pedestrians being injured by cars or bicycles.

You can help stop the expansion of shared surfaces. There is an early day motion, a petition which only MPs can sign, active at the moment that is calling on the government to instruct local authorities to halt the conversion of areas in to shared surfaces until the Department of Transport has published research on the issue. Please urge your MP to sign EDM 496. To send an email directly to your MP asking them to do this please go to www.guidedogs.org.uk/sharedstreets.

Help keep public spaces safe for everyone, and demand that no more shared surfaces are built.
