HRH The Princess Royal has received a preview tour of Café 55, a new eaterie in Exeter.
The café will soon be open to the public and has been specifically created by us to provide catering work experience for deafblind people.
The Princess Royal - our patron - saw how the building has been transformed with a purpose built training kitchen with accessible surfaces and equipment that can be used by people with multi-sensory impairments.
As part of the preview, the Princess was shown a special widget menu by deafblind woman, Donna Sheppard from Upton Pyne. Widgets are writing with symbols and pictures which are often compared to British Sign Language, as a visual form of communication. Donna created the menu herself, which offers a wide range of drinks and snacks.
The café is called Café 55 after 1955, which is the year Sense was founded. It's also an easy name to sign.
Make sure you visit Café 55 when it opens to the public in a few weeks. You'll find it at Providence Court, 37, Northernhay Street, Exeter, Devon, EX4 3ER.
