Stop motion fun

by Nic Vogelpoel

Nic VogelpoelI had always wondered how you make a stop motion film. The artists working at Glenside Resource Centre in Spalding have been working with the form, creating films that would make Wallace and Gromit jealous, indeed.

If you’ve never seen a stop motion animation before, see the video above, made by the photography and video group at Glenside.

The video is of short animations made mainly using Lego. They include little figures walking over Lego buildings and along paths, a friendly dragon meeting a horse, a Lego car race, Lego police, and a Hallowe'en story about a ghost made with paper cutouts.

It all started when a few members of the photography team and collaborators on the newsletter team decided that they needed a new way to tell stories, and communicate some of their ideas.

On a dreary day in May, there was nothing but sunshine inside the media suite. The group had decided today to create some backgrounds and sets for an upcoming film, set in Spain.

The story itself is still in the writing stage, but it seems like a good mix of love, betrayal, truth, lies and violence will all feature – an homage to Almodovar perhaps?

Thanks Nic, glad you enjoyed your morning with us here at Glenside! The stop motion films are easy to produce, they just take a little time to set up each frame. If anyone is interested in doing similar work, all you need is a PC, a webcam, compatible software (ours was 'freeware' and there are a few programs to choose from and try out) and a bit of imagination!

Thankyou Nic.
It was a pleasure for us all to meet you and the team really enjoyed working with you.

Ben and Imogen - thank you for the extra information. I did indeed enjoy my day with you all at Glenside. How is the film coming along now? Have you started work on the next instalment?

These look like so much fun to create and combine being creative with technology - fantastic. Given that most homes have pc's now and that many of these have built in webcams it looks as though it would be pretty straight forward for someone to set this up at as an activity at home too.
