Sense comments on the euthanasia of deaf twins in Belgium

16 January 2013

It was recently widely reported in the media that deaf twins in Belgium had ended their lives by euthanasia, after finding out that they would both soon lose their sight. They had lived together for all their adult lives and feared that they would no longer be able to see and communicate with each other.

The real tragedy of this story is that people can live rich and rewarding lives, despite having significant sight or hearing loss. Sense works closely with hundreds of people in similar situations helping them to adjust to the big changes that loss of sight and/or hearing brings.

If you are a deaf person losing their sight, or if you know someone in that situation, please contact our Information and advice service to find out about the support and services we offer to deafblind people.
