Step by step, you’re helping deafblind children make great progress!
Nadia and her family are learning to communicate in new ways.
Baby Nadia has CHARGE syndrome, which affects her vision, hearing and balance. Although she’s a very happy baby, she used to become very anxious and upset when she was away from her mum, even for a few moments.
Nadia and her family have taken part in Sense’s ground-breaking Tuning-in programme, which helps families with deafblind children communicate. It helps parents better understand the unique signals that can be missed in day-to-day life — signals that may offer vital clues to the wants and needs of their child. Nadia’s mum, Ewa, says:
"Tuning-in has helped me understand more about Nadia. Sometimes you just don’t know what to expect when your child has special needs."
Watch this lovely video clip from one of Nadia and Ewa’s Tuning-in sessions.
You can join Teddy’s celebration!
Remember Teddy the toy monkey from his letter at Christmas? Your help inspired him to run the London Marathon and support his best friend Matthew.
Teddy ran with Matthew’s uncle, Matt, who finished in 3 hours and 19 minutes! Matt said
“Teddy and I were happy to do whatever we can to ensure that the important work Sense does can continue”.
Have a look at our photo slideshow (on the right) from the day of the marathon, featuring Matt, Matthew and Teddy.
In your summer edition of Reaching out, you can also read about how little Jesse has been getting on since last summer and how Sense is helping deafblind teen Harry (as pictured below).
Your gift of £10 could buy a star-shaped tambourine, which a deafblind child like Jesse can shake and feel the vibrations of the music.
Your gift of £35 could help send the brothers and sisters of a deafblind child on a Siblings Weekend to gain a better understanding of what life is like for children like Harry and bring them even closer.
Your gift of £56 could help a deafblind child like Nadia attend a Sense pre-school group and explore the world around them.
Your gift of £100 could go towards a Tuning-in session with a Sense specialist for a deafblind child like Nadia.
Please give a gift today so we can help more deafblind children like Nadia, Matthew, Harry and Jesse.
