Mayoral opening for new Sense children’s centre

17 August 2012

The new Sense Manor Lodge children’s centre near Peterborough was officially opened by the Mayor of Market Deeping, Councillor Howard, on 9 August 2012 during a fun-filled family day.

The centre caters for children with multi-sensory impairment and facilities include a family room with specialist equipment to encourage learning and communication in a relaxed environment.

Deafblind children and their siblings helped the Mayor unveil a specially designed tactile plaque with Braille inscription during the launch day.  Other highlights of the day included a drumming session, a drama workshop and swimming in the specially adapted hydrotherapy pool on site.

Steve Rose, Head of Children’s Services at Sense, said:

“This new centre means we can support even more deafblind children to learn and develop. So much of what we know about the world comes from our senses of sight and hearing so children who are born deaf and blind face many barriers. But with the right support, tailored to their individual needs, deafblind children can achieve so much.”

“We would like to thank all of the donors who made the centre conversion possible, in particular the John and Lucille van Geest Foundation.”
