Essex Sense club: 13 years of making a difference for deafblind people

07 December 2012

The Essex day club a social group for deafblind adults has just celebrated its 13th birthday. Taking place at the Essex branch of Sense, a national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind, these monthly mutual support meetings are aimed at overcoming isolation.

The day club organises leisure activities and supports multi-sensory impaired individuals to participate as much as possible in their local communities. Dedicated volunteers help them to become more independent or reduce isolation by enabling them to share experiences and activities with others.

Joanna Harris, a Sense volunteer, said: “The Essex day club is a chance for all the members to share successes and concerns, to bounce ideas and experiences around in an informal and safe environment and importantly a time for many stories and lots of laughter!”

The Sense Essex branch (based in Basildon) is looking for volunteers to get involved in the day club. If you’d like to make a difference in your local community and support deafblind people please contact Peggy Keeble at 01268 544593 or sense_essex@hotmail.com.
