Campaigning in Europe

Decisions made at the European Union (EU) level have a major impact on the lives of deafblind people in the UK. This is because much of legislation that is passed in the UK parliament has started its life as EU legislation.

Sense campaigns at an EU level, to ensure that the needs of deafblind people are included in all decisions that affect them.

We work directly with the Members of the European Parliament, officials at the European Commission and the disability umbrella group, the European Disability Forum, to influence decisions being made in Brussels and Strasbourg and to raise the profile of deafblindness.

The European Union does not have the power to legislate on all areas of life that are relevant to the needs of deafblind people. However there are some key areas that are important, such as travel and access to technology and television, and we seek to influence decisions made in these areas.

We campaign both as Sense and as a member of the European Deafblind Network (EDbN), to give us the chance to influence as widely as possible.
