Shared surfaces: an introduction
On 19 February 2009 Sense Campaigns Assistant Jim Lewis joined approximately thirty other people outside Sloane Square Tube station in west London to protest against the conversion of the area in to a shared surface.
A shared surface is a space which motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can all use. Sense joined forces with the West London Residents' association and the Guide Dogs association to highlight the fact that shared surfaces make sections of cities dangerous for people with disabilities as well as older people to walk through. Shared surfaces increase the risk of pedestrians being injured by cars or bicycles.
In April Jim went back to Sloane Square to record the video below, which explains why this shared surface is so dangerous and how you can help Sense to defend the right of deafblind people to travel safely. Watch this video and take the action we need you to take to stop shared surfaces.
