General practices and clinics
When deafblind patients use general practice surgeries they may need support. Here’s how you can help:
-
Building Relationships. Take time to introduce yourself, and if possible, it is very useful for the deafblind patient to always see the same member of staff. This will help to build confidence for both parties.
-
Longer appointments. You may need to allow a longer appointment for a deafblind person as some specialist communication methods can be slow.
-
Clear Communication. Take your time to explain things clearly and slowly, especially for diagnosis and treatment, and book an interpreter if necessary.
